Porcine Factor VIII

Porcine Factor VIII

Specifically for those people who have hemophilia A, the use of porcine factor VIII offers another therapeutic option. Porcine factor VIII, which is made from pig plasma, is similar enough to its human counterpart to work effectively in the human clotting system. However, it is different enough that inhibitors do not always recognize it to the same extent as they do the human factor VIII. This product has been shown to be effective in stopping major bleeds in patients whose inhibitor does not destroy porcine factor VIII. However, allergic side effects and a temporary drop in platelet counts can occur with the use of this product, which is limited to serious often life or limb threatening bleeding episodes. It is not used for routine treatment of bleeding episodes in inhibitor patients at home or in a clinic.
