As the healthcare reform debate continues, NHF wants to ensure the needs of those affected by bleeding disorders are considered. We want to be ready for any and all opportunities that will allow us to put our issues in the spotlight. For example, many of you may have heard the story of Thomas Wilkes, a member of the Colorado bleeding disorders community, whose father Nathan shared what happened to the family after Thomas maxed out his lifetime limit on the family’s insurance plan. In August, Nathan had the opportunity to share his story with attendees at the Town Hall meeting in Grand Junction, Colorado, prior to introducing President Obama. This meeting was followed by additional print and television interviews, and the invitation to be a guest of the President at his Congressional healthcare reform address to last month.
While it’s rare that individuals will get to share their personal stories directly with the president, the media, lawmakers and others often contact NHF for stories or help connecting to individuals within our community. For NHF to be more successful in responding to these inquiries in a timely and effective manner, we need more stories.
