The bleeding disorders community in Texas held an awareness day at the state capitol in Austin on Thursday, March 15, 2007. Chapter representatives from the Texas Central Hemophilia Association in Dallas and the Lone Star Chapter of the National Hemophilia Foundation in Houston along with NHF, the Hemophilia Federation of America and the Committee of Ten Thousand distributed handouts, shared “seeds of hope” wildflower mix, gave away “united in blood” bracelets and shared personal stories. Their aim was to make the public and legislators aware of the astronomical cost of healthcare for the bleeding disorders community and specifically of the need for a Lifetime Maximum Benefits (LMB) plan on health insurance policies in the state. A door knocking effort proved fruitful, as three key legislators-from the House and Senate--agreed to co-sponsor a bill regarding a study by the Texas Department of Insurance to raise or eliminate the LMB on health insurance policies.
