The National Hemophilia Foundation’s (NHF) Medical and Scientific Advisory Council (MASAC) issued a new prophylaxis recommendation on November 3, 2007. It was adopted by NHF’s Board of Directors on November 4, 2007.
MASAC Document #179: MASAC Recommendation Concerning Prophylaxis
This document recognizes the proven benefits to patients with hemophilia of regularly administrating clotting factor to prevent bleeding. It lays out guidelines for prophylactic factor dosing, as well as recommendations supporting regular follow-up evaluations. It also stresses the need for patients to document bleeds and/or other complications. An appendix lists important considerations that patients and their families need to make prior to deciding on prophylaxis.
