With obesity increasing at an alarming rate in the US and in youth with bleeding disorders—young adults with hemophilia are twice as likely to be overweight as their peers—NHF, its National Youth Leadership Institute (NYLI) and Bayer HealthCare have partnered to do something about it. Healthy eating, exercising and making healthy choices are all on the agenda for the programs conducted at the camps this summer.
Members of NYLI will use fun, interactive activities to spread their message to younger youth to lead healthier, more active lifestyles. Outside the RV, a physical therapist will lead campers in exercises to promote healthy nutrition; strength training tips; cardiovascular games that count as fitness; and flexibility and stretching techniques to take home. Inside, campers will explore healthy living computer stations and take quizzes to see what they know about proper portion size and the importance of sufficient sleep.
In addition, campers will find out more about personalizing their fitness program through a Web-based tracking system that manages each participant’s exercise, workout, diet and weight loss progress. Campers who keep up the pace for six months will be eligible for prizes, awarded at NHF’s 61st Annual Meeting in San Francisco October 29-31, 2009.
Finally, all campers will be encouraged to “pen the pledge,” signing a healthy living pledge on the bus in full view of everyone, demonstrating their commitment to daily fitness throughout the year.
The Team Hemophilia RV and NYLI leaders will be presenting their health and fitness program at the following camps:
- Camp Independence, Tishomingo, OK - June 13
- Camp Hemotion, Coarsegold, CA - June 24
- Camp Wannaklot, Rutledge, GA - July 27
- Camp Warren Jyrch, Hudson, IL - July 30
- Midwest Hemophilia Assn Wilderness Camp, Lawson, MO - August 6
