NHF’s National Youth Leadership Institute Scores High Marks

The National Hemophilia Foundation (NHF) held its National Youth Leadership Institute (NYLI) during the 57th Annual Meeting at the San Diego Marriott Hotel and Marina on October 27-29, 2005. NYLI’s core session on peer leadership skills scored high marks from its participants.

A total of 27 young adults, ranging in age from 16-25 years, were competitively selected based upon outstanding leadership achievements. These young adults were all in some way affected by bleeding disorders and came from across the country to participate. The curriculum consisted of specially designed educational sessions focusing on leadership skills, teambuilding activities and problem-solving techniques. After the NYLI trainings, participants become responsible for implementing a “Do the 5” educational activity for young people with bleeding disorders in their local communities.

NYLI members gained new skills, new friends and goals for working with young people in their local communities. Here is what some had to say:

“NYLI rocks! I learned SO much through the sessions and had an awesome time. I felt empowered to do more in my local chapter and am looking forward to future involvement.”

“I really enjoyed the NYLI program, and it honestly made me feel like I actually made a difference, since it offered so many new resources to me.”

“ I was always engaged and challenged to be a better leader.”

“I really like the program because it gives me a chance to meet other youth from across the country. This is the first time I’ve met people my own age outside of Oregon.”
