August 29, 2006 marks the one-year anniversary of the devastation wrought by Hurricane
Katrina in the Gulf States region of the country. The anniversary reminds us of how the
bleeding disorders community pulled together to help chapters, consumers and
hemophilia treatment centers affected by the disruption to their lives, homes and
businesses.
Thanks to all of you who gave to the NHF Katrina Relief Fund. NHF would like to
personally thank the following pharmaceutical companies that generously contributed
half a million units of factor to needy individuals between September and December
2005 and continue to donate to this day: Baxter, Bayer HealthCare, Grifols USA, Novo
Nordisk, Wyeth and ZLB Behring.
During the past year, NHF has raised awareness of the need for emergency preparedness
through a series of education/outreach opportunities. At the On the Road meetings in
Minneapolis and Denver, consumers learned how to create emergency action plans for
their families and communities.
Looking ahead, at the Annual Meeting, attendees are encouraged to attend the “Survivor
101” session, reiterating the message of preparedness for all of us. Find out about NHF’s
collaboration with Columbia University’s Center on Preparedness and the steps you can
take to develop individual and community action plans for use during crises. At the same
time, find out about the CDC program for emergency preparedness, using NHF as a
model for other national organizations that serve people with chronic health conditions.
