On August 24 the Andretti Winery in California’s Napa Valley was the site of a unique
fundraising event for the National Hemophilia Foundation (NHF). Hosted by the Michael
Andretti Foundation (MAF), the event, raised money for Meals on Wheels of Napa
Valley, the Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation and NHF.
More than 200 race fans and friends of the Michael Andretti Foundation attended the
evening event, a wine tasting and silent auction with appetizers and entertainment.
During a question and answer session, they interacted with Andretti Green Racing drivers
Bayer HealthCare and Nuvelo, Inc., provided joint sponsorship of the event, donating
$10,000 to MAF, which in turn gave the proceeds to NHF for its work to find a cure for
bleeding and clotting disorders. NHF would like to thank Joseph Akers, executive vice
president of Bayer HealthCare and president, hematology/cardiology, and Ted W. Love,
MD, chair and CEO of Nuvelo, Inc., for securing the sponsorship.
The event was part of the Indy Racing League’s pre-race activities leading up to the Indy
Grand Prix of Sonoma race on August 27 at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, CA.
The 53-acre winery, which is open to the public, is the site of many charity events
throughout the year. The Michael Andretti Foundation, a 501 (c)(3) organization founded
in 2003, helps people in need. It promotes programs that improve the health, education
and welfare of America’s children and citizens.
