Preparedness & Prevention: Important information you should know!
Plenary/overview of psychosocial barriers to prevention behaviors--including preparedness as a prevention behavior, stressing the need to be practicing Do the 5! in order to be able to think about preparedness.
Setting the Stage: Stories from the Bayou and Beyond
Stories about emergencies and the need to be prepared focusing on crisis response and lessons learned: how hurricanes Katrina and Rita and other emergency situations in everyday life show us the need to be prepared. Some topics will include an ER plan, carrying factor, and introduction of the GO BAG.
Preparedness Workshop
Columbia University experts in disaster preparedness will lead prevention teams through the preparation of local action plans and discuss how to implement emergency preparedness plans for our specific population.
Getting Results
Learn how adherence to treatment and lifestyle recommendations were quantified in a rigorous scientific study of hemophilia patients and how the different levels of adherence can impact quality of life.
Putting it into Practice
Role plays will incorporate lessons learned throughout the day. Explore how to set reasonable personal goals for responsibility to self and to consumers; learn communication skills needed by all; appreciate real life stories in crisis-response situations; describe how to facilitate effective emergency responses within the family unit.

Saturday June 24: New! Thrombophilia Workshop for Providers Co-hosted between NHF and NATT

Program Highlights

Inherited vs. Acquired Thrombophilia
Both inherited and acquired risk factors that increase the risk of thrombosis will be reviewed. Controversies surrounding testing for thrombophilia will be addressed as well as treatment and management implications of the inherited thrombophilias.
Women’s Health Issues
Clotting disorders pose important problems for women because of their relationship to reproductive issues, such as clotting complications of pregnancy and recurrent fetal loss. The speaker will address the heightened risks women face and the appropriate diagnosis and treatment during their lifespan.
Venous vs. Arterial Clots
The treatment of thrombosis is based on an understanding of the processes that lead to its development and propagation. Arterial thrombosis is characterized by platelet activation and responds to anti-platelet therapy. Venous thrombosis, by contrast, is a consequence of coagulation factor activation and is best treated with anticoagulants like heparin and warfarin. The speaker will address these issues related to published management guidelines that recommend the preferential use of these anticoagulants to prevent and treat venous thromboembolism.
Pediatrics
Diagnosis, treatment and management of thrombosis and thrombophilia in pediatric patients will be discussed. The approach in children will be contrasted to that of the adult population.
Discussion on Comprehensive Care Model in Thrombophilia
Panelists will discuss strategies for integrating thrombosis and thrombophilia care into the comprehensive care model. Topics to be addressed include: setting up a thrombosis clinic; educating consumers; dealing with social issues including worker’s compensation, disability and monetary issues, and addressing genetic inheritance and family testing.
Social Work/Social Issues in Thrombophilia
This session will look at the role of social work in thrombophilia. There are many psychosocial issues and problem areas that go with this diagnosis. We will also look at making the transition from working with bleeding disorders to including thrombosis in the patient population. We will also look at resources available to social workers.

FAQs about On the Road

Q. How can I receive CEU credits for attending?
Applications and all materials needed for Continuing Education Units (CEU) and a list of approved sessions will be available at the On the Road meetings. The processing fee for all CEU credits has been incorporated into the registration price. All completed CEU applications and evaluation forms for each credited session must be completed and submitted to NHF on site in order to receive credits.

Q. Who should attend?
Healthcare providers of all levels working with patients with thrombophilia or thrombosis.

Q. How much does it cost?
The fee for On the Road is $10 per person.

Q. Who will be there?
National Hemophilia Foundation & The National Alliance for Thrombosis and Thrombophilia leaders, national experts in thrombophilia, HTC professionals, social workers and physical therapists will all be on hand to network and share best practices in the treatment and care of thrombophilia and thrombosis.
