Family of Son with Hemophilia (Wilkes), Featured in White House Video on Lifetime Insurance Caps

The Wilkes family was recently filmed for a White House video on their family's issues with private insurance and lifetime caps.  In the video below, Nathan and Sonji Wilkes explain the extreme difficulties they have had to face to ensure adequate insurance coverage for their son Thomas, who has severe hemophilia.  They describe their ongoing struggles with insurance companies and how after Thomas hit the $1 million lifetime cap on his insurance plan, a social worker suggested that Nathan and Sonji get a divorce so Thomas could get onto Medicaid.  Nathan and Sonji eloquently describe the financial and emotional toll that Thomas' lifetime cap has placed on their family.  "The illness?  Honestly, a piece of cake compared to all that," Nathan said, referring to their lifetime cap issues.

Nathan also sat in the President's box on September 9, 2009, while President Obama gave a healthcare speech to a joint session of Congress.  He was one of a handful of Americans facing difficult health insurance issues invited to attend the speech with First Lady Michelle Obama.  A few weeks ago, NHF worked with Families USA to arrange for Nathan to introduce President Obama at a town hall meeting in Grand Junction, CO.  You can learn more about Nathan's experience here.
