Val Bias Featured in Black Enterprise Magazine November 10, 2008
Val Bias, the National Hemophilia Foundation’s (NHF) CEO, is featured in the “On the Move” column of the Powerplay Department in the November 2008 issue of Black Enterprise magazine. The department highlights African-American men and women who have been appointed to new management positions in the corporate world.
Black Enterprise magazine is a monthly business publication for African-American professionals and entrepreneurs. It has a paid circulation of 525,000, with approximately 4.3 million readers. Along with the magazine, it also has two weekly, syndicated national television series, “Our World with Black Enterprise,” hosted by Ed Gordon, an Emmy Award-winning journalist; and “Black Enterprise Business Report.” The magazine is available online at: www.blackenterprise.com. |

NHF Announces VP for Chapter Services January 16, 2008
The National Hemophilia Foundation (NHF) announces the appointment of Joseph J. Kleiber as Vice President for Chapter Services, a newly created department at NHF.
As Vice President for Chapter Services Joe’s responsibilities include working with individual chapters as they adopt chapter standards; coordinating requests for assistance; facilitating mentoring relationships; fostering connections with local businesses; conducting routine surveys to gather chapter feedback; acting as a liaison to build bridges between chapters and HTCs; and helping devise tools and resources to meet chapter needs.
Joe brings more than 30 years of experience in nonprofit organizations to the position, most recently with the American Liver Foundation, where he served for the past 11 years as the National Senior Vice President, Field Operations, after serving as Vice President, Field Services and Director of Chapter Services & Development. Joe oversaw all activities related to the organization’s 25 chapters, including building a chapter network/ recruiting staff; fundraising; fiscal management, and program services. Prior to that Joe worked at other voluntary healthcare organizations in both chapter and field positions.
Joe holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Social Welfare from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. |

NHF ANNOUNCES NEW INTERIM CEO August 6, 2007
The National Hemophilia Foundation announces the appointment of Howard A. Balsam, CPA, to the position of Interim Chief Executive Officer effective immediately. He replaces Dr. Alan Kinniburgh, who held the position of NHF CEO since January 2005. “The Board of Directors would like to thank Dr. Kinniburgh for his dedication to our owners and for helping to make NHF a more robust and stable organization,” said Ray Stanhope, Chair of the Board.
Howard Balsam joined NHF in April 2005 as Chief Operating Officer. Since then he has successfully enhanced NHF’s financial and operational structure. Previously, he was the Chief Financial Officer of The Education Alliance, Inc., where he managed the Finance, Management Information Systems and Facilities Divisions.
Prior to this, Mr. Balsam served as Controller of the MET Council, Inc., and Director of Finance/Corporate Administration of the Catholic Medical Center of Brooklyn and Queens, New York.
Mr. Balsam received a B.A. in economics from New York’s Hunter College. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants--Member, Not-for-Profit/Tax Exempt Committees.
