Nurses Working Group Guidelines
 

The Nursing Working Group (NWG) is a professional working group under the organizational auspice of the Medical and Scientific Advisory Committee (MASAC) of the National Hemophilia Foundation (NHF). The NWG typically consists of nursing representatives from each of the 12 federal regions.

Qualifications:
Representatives must be registered nurses with a minimum of 3-years experience in bleeding disorders and be employed by a federally funded Hemophilia treatment center.

 

Positions:

Representatives: The NWG is made up of representatives from each of the 12 federal regions.  Occasionally 1 or 2 of the regions combine representatives. In this case, the extra 1-2 positions are designated to chair and vice chair respectively.

 

Officials: The NWG members elect all officials. 

1.     Chair:  Responsibilities include organization of NHF planning meetings and phone conferences, overall coordination for NWG and liaison to MASAC. The chair will attend two MASAC meetings, which are held twice per year. The chair may serve on the NWG for one full term prior to this appointment.

2.     Vice Chair: Responsibilities include assisting the Chair with program planning and organizing the Nursing Excellence Committee which allocates annual  nursing research funding.

3.     Secretary:   The role includes taking notes at NHF and phone meetings and distributing notes to NWG members.

 

Special Appointments:

1.     NHF Planning Representatives: Two nursing representatives are selected to coordinate the NHF National meeting each year.

2.     Ethics Representative:  One nurse serves as a liaison to the NHF ethics committee. This person may be an alumna of the NWG and not a current nursing  representative.

3.     Canadian Representative: One nurse serves as the liaison to the Canadian nurses. This person attends  at least one of the Canadian Nurse’s annual meetings. Travel is not funded by NHF.

4.     Research Representative:  One nurse serves to facilitate and implement nursing research.

 

Terms: 

NWG representatives and officials serve no more than a 4-year term. An exception is the Chair  who could possibly serve up to an additional 4-year term.  There may be slight exceptions to these terms i.e. the Vice Chair may have a year extension before he/she becomes Chair if the Chair has not completed his/her full term.  Term exceptions will be voted by the NWG.

Both Chair and Vice Chair will be elected into office by the Nursing Working Group. Vice Chair does not automatically become chair, but must be elected. 

 

Terms will begin at the NWG meeting held at the NHF Annual Meeting.

New nursing representatives are selected the previous August before the end of the current representative term. The new representative is encouraged, though not mandated, to attend the last meeting of the outgoing representative, though NHF funding is not provided. Terms end in four years at the NHF meeting.

 

 

 

 

General responsibilities of the Nursing Working Group Includes:
 

1.DEVELOP AND PROMOTE STANDARDS OF NURSING PRACTICE IN HEMOPHILIA, BLEEDING DISORDERS AND THROMBOPHILIA: Example: Nurses Guide to Bleeding Disorders

2. PROMOTE PROFESSIONAL NURSING DEVELOPMENT IN HEMOPHILIA, BLEEDING DISORDERS AND THROMBOPHILIA: Example:  NHF meetings, nursing research, continuing education of nurses.

3. PROMOTE HEALTH AND EDUCATION TO BLEEDING DISORDER COMMUNITY:  Example: general health education in clinic and development of bleeding disorder educational material.

4. ADVISORY ROLE TO MASAC IN RELATION TO NURSING ISSUES: This includes nursing practice: nursing, patient, and family education; and nursing research.

 

Specific Responsibilities of the Nursing Working Group includes:

a.     Actively initiate, plan and assume responsibility for special Working Group

projects including the nursing programming portions of the NHF Annual Meeting

b. Communicate with hemophilia nurses in their region regularly. Monitor and support nursing activities in their federal region.

c. Advocate for the concerns of bleeding disorder nurses.

d. Attend two in-person meetings a year (one held at NHF) as well as periodic phone conference calls

e. As needed, represent the NWG on various NHF Committees and at related ambassadorial functions.

Termination
NWG members who repeatedly fail to carry out responsibilities may have their membership terminated by the Chair.

Application Materials
Applicants are primarily selected on the regional level in August. The retiring representative queries all nurses in their region to assess if they are interested in joining the Nursing Working Group. If more than one applicant applies, a vote is taken by nurses in the region. The selected nurse submits two items to the Nursing Working Group:

a. An updated curriculum vita or professional resume

b. A letter of support from their treatment center director, agency director or appropriate supervisor. NWG responsibilities require considerable time and energy. A letter from your employer/supervisor is needed to acknowledge the professional commitment needed as a NWG member.
