Through the Looking Glass Scholarships

Amount: Fifteen, $1000 scholarships via “Through the Looking Glass’ National Center for Parents with Disabilities and their Families”

Candidate: Open to high school seniors or college students under age 21 with a disability or with a parent affected by a disability (or medical condition).  You must be planning to enroll or attend a 2 or 4 year college, or accredited technical or vocational school in fall 2013. The student must be pursuing a certificate, license, AA/AS/BA or BS degree. Financial need will not be the criteria in 10 of the 15 available scholarships.

Beth Carew Memorial Scholarship Program
Amount: Total number of awards can vary each year (may be up to 20, $4,000 college awards)
Candidate: Must be an individual diagnosed with hemophilia, von Willebrand disease or other inherited bleeding disorder and either entering or attending an accredited 2- or 4-year undergraduate institution in the U.S.  High school seniors, undergrad freshmen, sophomores and juniors may also apply.  Students who are pursuing or resuming an undergrad degree later in adulthood may apply if there was a gap in their academic career.  Applicants will also need to show volunteer time spent directly benefitting the bleeding disorders community.

The Doreen McMullan McCarthy Memorial Academic Scholarship for Women with Bleeding Disorders – 2013

Candidate: The Victory for Women Program (V4W) is proud to announce an academic scholarship for women with bleeding disorders commemorating Doreen McMullan McCarthy, a young nurse and loving mother, who passed away from complications of von Willebrand Disease in 1979 when she was 25 years old. This scholarship is named in her honor, and those family members who keep her spirit alive:  her mother, Connie McMullan, her brother, Patrick McMullan, and her son, Jamie McCarthy.

Amount
: Individual awards range from up to $2,500 for vocational/technical and community colleges and up to $7,000 for colleges/universities.  A total of $50,000 was awarded to 11 recipients with hemophilia, ranging from 17 to 51 years of age with diverse educational goals in 2012.

Eligibility: Any individual who is diagnosed with a congenital or acquired chronic bleeding disorder and who has annually attended a hemophilia treatment center’s comprehensive clinic including this past 2012 year is eligible. The applicant must have maintained a GPA of 2.5 or above and is enrolled (or plans to enroll), as a full or part-time student at an accredited vocational/trade school, technical school, junior college, or a four-year college/university.

Hemophilia Foundation of Michigan Academic Assistance Awards

Amount:  Two scholarships are awarded for $2,500.

Candidate:  Available to anyone with a bleeding disorder, family members of those with a bleeding disorder, or family members of someone who died due to complications of a bleeding disorder. The applicant must be seeking a post-secondary education, which can include a college, university or trade school.

Amount:  One $1,000 award

Candidate:  Available to any post-secondary undergraduate student who has been diagnosed with a bleeding disorder and lives in the service area of MHA (specifically Western Missouri and Eastern Kansas). The applicant must be pursuing continuing education via college or trade school.

Mary M. Gooley Hemophilia Center Scholarship and Bob Hersh Memorial Scholarship
Amount
: Awards totaling $2,000. 
Candidate: Eligible individual must be a person affected directly or indirectly by hemophilia, von Willebrand disease, other hereditary bleeding disorder or hemochromatosis.  High school seniors, graduates, students in good-standing already enrolled in a post-secondary program, or planning to enroll in a course of study at an accredited 2 or 4-year college, university, or vocational technical school program or certified training program, with priority given to undergraduate study. Applicants must reside in upstate NY or be enrolled in a post-secondary program in upstate NY. (Please see website for a specific list of upstate NY counties.)

Amount:  Two, $2500 awards

Candidate:  Available to individuals living with a bleeding disorder, their siblings or their parents, who are also active, participating members of HACA. The applicant’s home must be located in Prince Georges or Montgomery County, Maryland, Northern Virginia, or Washington, DC. Scholarship awards are meant for either high school seniors and undergraduates attending  an accredited nonprofit college, university, vocational, or technical school in the US, or college seniors planning to attend graduate school or students enrolled in graduate school.
