MASAC Recommendation #94
MASAC Resolution Regarding Consumer Participation in the National Notification System
The following resolution was approved by the Medical and Scientific Advisory Council (MASAC) on November 6, 1999, and adopted by the NHF Board of Directors on December 21, 1999.
MASAC is concerned that the voluntary notification system for reporting problems with plasma-derived and recombinant clotting factor products has not been effectively promoted to consumers. Since effectiveness of the voluntary warning system is directly related to enrollment, we strongly encourage the IPPIA and National Notification System to develop more effective outreach strategies. We also strongly encourage distributors, home care companies, hemophilia treatment centers, and local chapters to actively inform consumers about the notification system. Privacy and confidentiality need to remain of paramount importance. We also urge consumers to enroll in this direct notification system as the quickest and most direct way of being notified of any recalls involving product that they might have in their possession but have not yet used.
