NHF’s Next Collaborative Learning Exchange will be on

Clinical Challenges in the Management of Pregnancy and Delivery in Women, Girls, and People with the Propensity to Menstruate (WGPPM)

This live virtual workshop will provide prescribers with an opportunity for interactive discussion about the challenges health care providers face when managing the potential complications that can present during pregnancy and delivery for WGPPMs with a family history and/or symptoms of a bleeding disorder.

Participants will be asked to apply their own decision-making skills in considering several case studies.

This virtual activity will be held live on May 11, 2023, from 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm EDT 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm CDT/ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm MDT/ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm PDT

 

Target Audience:
These activities are intended for physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners who regularly prescribe therapies for individuals living with von Willebrand disease and/or hemophilia A and B.

The event presenters are:

Peter A. Kouides, MD
Medical & Research Director at the Mary M. Gooley Hemophilia Center

Andra H. James, MD
OB-GYN consultant and a specialist in maternal-fetal medicine and high-risk obstetrics

The event format will include:

  • Presentation on the latest information on the challenges health care providers face when managing the potential complications that can present during pregnancy and delivery for WGPPMs with a family history and/or symptoms of a bleeding disorder.
  • Group review and discussion of case studies
  • Summary and discussion of lessons learned

Learning Objectives:

  1. Discuss the prevalence of underlying bleeding disorders that affect pregnant women and the maternal implications of an underlying bleeding disorder
  2. State the mechanisms of life-threatening bleeding at the time of delivery including the fetal/neonatal implications of an underlying bleeding disorder
  3. Describe obstetrical options for severe PPH while considering the components of the clinical and laboratory evaluation by the hematologist antepartum
  4. Identify when patients can be cleared for epidural analgesia dependent on the type of bleeding disorder
  5. Describe hemostatic evaluation and management approaches during antepartum and at the time of delivery for women with underlying bleeding disorders involving:

    a.    Von Willebrand disease
    b.    Hemophilia carriership
    c.    Rare, severe, and other bleeding disorders

  6. Collaborate within the healthcare team for shared patient-centered and population focused problem-solving for those experiencing bleeding disorders as derived from discussion-based treatment strategies and evidence-based practice

Following the event, a resource document will be shared to support the learning provided by the activity along with a list of supplemental resources.
