NHF joins the bleeding disorders community in mourning the passing of Barry Haarde. Barry was a figure of inspiration for the entire bleeding disorders community, not just in the US, but around the world.
Barry was born with severe hemophilia A. He, along with his brother, was infected by HIV and hepatitis C in 1985 from contaminated factor. Barry's brother passed away in 2007 from liver failure from hep C. It was partly this loss that inspired him to begin his cross country cycling expeditions. Barry said, "I use the bike rides as a way to try to eliminate the stigma and misperceptions out there about HIV." In 2012, he began Wheels for World, cross country bike rides to raise money for Save One LIfe, which provides funds directly to people with bleeding disorders in developing countries. Barry rode cross country each year, and ultimately rode more than 63,000 miles and raised more than $220,000 for the organization. On his 2016 ride, he took a photo with a red tie at each US state line in honor of Bleeding Disorders Awareness Month.
Barry Haarde was an inspirational figure to many for his indominable spirit, his kindness, and his generosity. NHF extends condolences to his friends and family, and joins the community in mourning the loss of one of their champions.
